The RD-MT Smart Scar Training
I was compelled to write this blog after receiving a message from a Medical tattooist asking me for advice on how to build their Medical tattoo business and an interest in The RD-MT Smart Scar Training. They are currently experiencing difficulty in obtaining patients and building a career. This is the case for numerous people coming out of training and are left to their own devices in an infant industry. I was in the same position many years ago, and it took a lot of time, sacrifice, and belief to persevere. Reading the email took me back to my younger days and how tough it was building my business, but most importantly the sheer amount of knowledge I have learned along the way, and what a waste it would be if I didn’t share that information with others.
The RD-MT Training
It led me to look at the content of the upcoming training and add an Advanced module, ‘Building Your Business’. This is integral to the technique and skills that will be taught, as ‘what benefit are techniques if you cannot put them to use’.
The majority of training courses concentrate on technique and how much you can charge per treatment, which is all well and good if you are getting enough patients each week. However, how to get the patients, how to follow up with them, how to ensure they get good results, and what to do if something goes wrong are invariably not addressed within most training courses.
It took me a very long time to get to this point in my career. I had to research a lot of information, work out specific techniques for all the different types of scarring, and more importantly figure out how to manage treatments 2, 3, 4 and 5, as again, most training courses only show you the initial treatment and you don’t get to see the healed result. The healed outcome can be dramatically different from how it looks during treatment and the result can be very confusing and scary when faced with that alone in the clinic, in front of a patient – how do you know what to do next. In my experience, Medical tattooing is never a one-session treatment.
Focus on training
My training offers to take you through many different types of scar medical tattoo treatments to the final outcome. It also shows you all the things that can go wrong and how you manage these risks, as well as what to do when they happen. Whatever industry you work in, you will come across mistakes, risks and anomalies, and how you manage these will determine how patients view you as a practitioner and therefore how long your career lasts.
Medical tattooing is not an easy route to take, it is a fairly new industry so many people still don’t know it exists, products are expensive, marketing is a necessity, and you are constantly faced with the unknown.
My main focus with The RD-MT Smart Scar Training is to walk alongside my trainees during this process so they have someone to ask questions to, have someone to supervise them as they are seeing patients and they have an insight into what it takes to become a great Medical Tattooist.
Building your business
Building your business is included as an advanced module, but also this is part and parcel of every module. Yes, I teach about how to reach patients and have them walk through the door, but also the ethics, the communication, the attention to their wellbeing and so much more is covered in all the modules.
It may be a hard journey to make money and retain patients, but on the other side, you are consistently helping people to feel good about themselves. They cry, they share, they become a part of your life, and you can help them, really help them to start living their lives in a way they want to, rather than being hindered by their visible difference. It’s a beautiful job, I wouldn’t swap it for the world.
This past year, I realised how much knowledge I have amassed over the years of constantly learning, researching, and trialing advanced techniques, being faced with unique visible differences with more people trusting me to try original approaches, with only one thing in mind, my only focal point – to give each and every patient the outcome they desire. And to be honest 98% of the time I manage that. The 2% of patients that don’t receive the outcome they desire plays on my mind as I consider, research, and meditate on how I can improve the 2%. How can I do a better job?
It’s exhausting at times, but it drives me forward onto divergent paths that if I wasn’t tested, I would never walk down. I’m now looking for people to share this path with, to pass on all the information I have accumulated over the many years so that more patients can be helped, practitioners get to offer more valuable treatments, and so we get the message about Medical Tattooing out to more people, so in time it will be a common part of the healing process.
