I identified with my reflection once more

Patient Story – Medical Tattooing for hair loss following cancer treatment

“I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and have been through two rounds of chemotherapy up until early this year.

The type of chemotherapy I have received so far did not mean hair loss and in fact, my eyelashes and eyebrows grew more and rather stunningly curly as a result.

I’ve now had to change to a different regime and the first thing my oncologist told me about, was that I would lose my hair.

For a number of reasons, I have received my chemotherapy at home and so far felt that my cancer was private and I shared the information with the people I wanted to share it with.

Being confronted with the prospect of losing my hair and brows now has emotionally been one of the hardest things to come to terms with.

I feel suddenly my cancer will be visible to all. And I know it’s not just the hair on my head but all over my body.

It now feels as if I’ll be wearing a great big sign around my neck saying: “I HAVE CANCER”

Hair loss makes cancer visible to all and I can no longer keep it private. This is a big step for me and one I’m struggling with.

identified with my reflection once more.

“I don’t think anyone can prepare you for the effect that chemotherapy has on your physical appearance. At 38 I’d gone from having long dark hair, long full lashes, and perfectly shaped natural eyebrows to not a single hair on my head, face, or body.

My brows and lashes didn’t fall out until my last round of chemo and it was at this stage that I not only felt horrendous physically, but I did not recognise my own reflection in the mirror. My confidence plummeted and all I wanted to do was hide away from the world.

I’ve always worn mascara and had my brows shaped, but I never fully appreciated the difference brows and lashes make to your facial features.

Medical tattooing is not something I have had to consider before, but having seen other women in treatment with beautiful brows, I knew this was something I wanted to try. Having my brows and liner was the best decision I could possibly have made at this time. It gave me the boost I needed to push myself forward. For the first time in a very long time, I felt like myself when I looked in the mirror. From this point forward, I did not feel so self-conscious when out and about my confidence started to grow.  I would absolutely recommend medical tattooing to anyone going through treatment.”
