I want to talk about something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. Every week, I see patients in my clinic who have lived with a visible difference for years, sometimes decades, before they finally decided to do something about it. Many of them are men.

They come in quietly. They often have not told their partner they are coming. Some have not told anyone. They sit down, they show me the scar or the area they are concerned about, and then they say something I hear more times than I can count: “I know it’s probably nothing. I know it is vain. But it’s been affecting me for years.”

It is not nothing. And it is not vain.

Why Men Wait Longer

There’s a real and well-documented reluctance among men to seek help for appearance concerns. Research suggests that men are more likely to feel that addressing how they look is somehow threatening to their sense of identity, that it isn’t something they’re ‘supposed’ to care about.

So they don’t mention it. They don’t search for it. They learn to live around it, choosing clothes carefully, avoiding certain situations, steering conversations away from it. They adapt. But adapting isn’t the same as being okay with it.

The scars I treat on men come from all kinds of places. Road traffic accidents. Surgery. Burns. Sport. Military injuries. Self-harm from younger years. Skin conditions. And what all of these patients have in common is that the scar has become a daily presence in their life, something they’re aware of even when no one else is.

Medical Tattooing is Not Just for Women

I think there’s a perception that cosmetic and medical treatments are a female domain. But the conditions I treat, scarring, skin grafts, hair loss, hypopigmentation, have no gender bias. They affect men and women equally. The distress they cause is equal too.

The process of medical tattooing is exactly the same regardless of who is in the chair. We start with a thorough consultation. I look at the area, assess the scar tissue, the skin tone, the Fitzpatrick type, and we talk about what is realistic. I explain how many sessions are likely, what the healing process involves, and what the result should look like.

We take it step by step. There’s no rush. And nothing happens until you’re ready and fully informed.

If You’ve Been Putting This Off

If you’re a man reading this and you’ve been quietly living with something you wish you could change, I want you to know that what you’re feeling is valid. The impact a visible difference has on your confidence, your work, your relationships, and your daily life is real – and it matters.

You don’t have to have a dramatic story to deserve treatment. You don’t have to be in crisis. You just have to want to feel a bit more comfortable in your own skin.

That’s enough reason to get in touch.

If you’d like to explore what medical tattooing could do for you, I offer consultations at 152 Harley Street, London and in Betchworth, Surrey. You’re welcome to get in touch via the enquiry form on our website or call directly for a confidential conversation.
