Consultation Information and Expectations for Patients

Read on for information about a medical tattooing consultation and what patients can expect at Rae Denman Medical Tattooing

Are you unsure about a treatment or a practitioner? Do you want more information but wonder if the consultation charge is worth it? This information is to help you understand what you can expect from a consultation, why it’s necessary, and how it can help you and the practitioner find the correct procedure or treatment plan for you.

Consultations can happen either in-clinic or online. If you are online you need to send (in focus) photographs of the area to the practitioner either by email or WhatsApp. (WhatsApp is encrypted so can be safe to send photos via here, although do ask that they be removed from the practitioner’s phone once uploaded to a secure site). If the consultation is regarding a sensitive area of the body you may feel more comfortable going to an in-clinic consultation, rather than sending photos.

The Medical Tattooing Consultation

At the start of the consultation, the practitioner will introduce themself and ask what your concern is? They will have read your medical history form and original enquiry in preparation, but need to hear from you, what your expectation is.

Medical Tattooing consultations will require knowledge of the source of the visible difference and any treatments you have subsequently had on the area of concern. Your medical history will be checked for any contraindications and if there are any, it will be explained to you why you cannot have medical tattooing either at this moment in time or, ever. If the practitioner knows of any alternative treatment/s that could be of help, they will refer you.

Once they have confirmed that you are suitable for medical tattooing, they will give you a full explanation of Medical Tattooing and how it works; the difference between normal body tattooing and Medical Tattooing; Why pigment is used rather than ink; Long term management (Colour Boosts); Risks and side effects; Important ‘Do Nots’; Aftercare; Retention of pigment; Pre-treatment advice.

After the information you will be offered a patch test to check for sensitivity to the pigment or the anaesthetic, and the practitioner will advise you whether you require a colour analysis patch test as well. This will usually have to be booked for another day. If your practitioner advises you that you are ready for treatment without a colour analysis patch test, they will either give you a treatment plan there and then, or they may need to consider the plan further in which case it will be emailed to you.

Any more questions

Although questions can be asked during the consultation, you will always be asked at the end if you have any more questions. If you have some written down, now is the time to check your list, or check with a friend (if you have come with someone), to make sure you have received all the information you want/need during the consultation. You will also be given time to go away and think. Never feel rushed into booking anything, take your time, and make sure you have the correct treatment, as well as a practitioner that you trust and can relate to.

With this information in mind, I hope you find what you are looking for.
